Women-Led Agroecological Movements in Brazil:
Illustrations of Triple Movement
Abstract
The present paper applies the feminist institutionalist concept of a triple movement to Brazil to shed light on the country’s contradiction regarding the so-called development. Starting from questioning what is development from an eco-feminist and post-colonial perspectives, the analysis reveals a reality that goes beyond the typical weak democratic institutions of a semi-peripheral country unable or unwilling to lift a significant share of its population out of the margins. A deeper institutional analysis, focused on bottom-up movements, more specifically on the agrarian women’s coalition behind the Marcha das Margaridas, simultaneously unveils their socio-environmental care work as the “feminized left hand of neoliberalism”, on one hand, and as a path for another possibility, for an alternative model, on the other hand.
